Short story by Luigi Pirandello
War (Original title: Quando si comprende) is a short story by Italian playwright and dramatist Luigi Pirandello first published in the short story collection Un Cavallo nella Luna in 1918.[1] The story follows a discussion between parents of soldiers in the First World War about how they deal with grief.[2][3] The story covers topics of patriotism, grief, and the destructive nature of war.[4][5] It is regarded by some as one of the greatest short stories of the Interwar period, along with Jean-Paul Sartre's The Wall.[6] The English translation of the story has since become a frequently taught piece of literature in the United States, Canada, and Germany.[7][8]
